Every tennis club or centre have different requirements, court time availability and financial situations to evaluate when preparing a tennis club programme. But below is a list of items that should be in every programme where possible.

A Mini Tennis Programme

including:

Mini Red (under 8's)

Sub-divide down into

  • 3-4 yrs Tots Sessions
  • 4-6 yrs Basic Technical Development
  • 7-8 yrs Technical & Tactical Development

Mini Orange (8-9)

Technical & Tactical sessions including Match-Play

Mini Green (9-10)

Technical & Tactical Sessions including Match-Play

A minimum of 1 weekend and 1 midweek session of each category depending on the size of the club, the number of coaches and the allowance of court space.

Junior Coaching from 11yrs to 17yrs

This should include:

  • Basic Open Group Standard from Beginners to Intermediate Level
  • Advanced Players in smaller sized squads (maximum of 4 players 'QuadSquads')
  • Tournament structure both for Internal Tournaments, External Match-Play and Junior Leagues.

Girls Only Groups

Where possible it would be great to establish some 'Girls Only' groups and squads.

Girls value the friendship gained from playing in groups with their friends. This also help establish new friendships too and in turn the girls tend to stay in the sport much longer.

However this should not be considered a must for coaches to do, but it would add to your programmes for sure.

Tennis Match-Play for all Juniors

Ensure your programme is not just about coaching.

Place a major emphasis on the following match-play formats:

  • Internal (friendly) Tournaments. Different age groups each weekend/school holiday
  • External (competitive) Tournaments. Set up LTA events at your club and also get the juniors to travel to other local tournaments too. Give help and advice on these.
  • Junior Leagues (internal club) to keep interest in the whole season for the players.
  • Club Team (external) visit and play either friendly matches or competitive matches against other clubs.

It is important that players get to understand why they have coaching and how to administer the skills they are learning into match-play situations.

Adult Section:

18 yrs and over.

Have a full coaching programme for both Men and Women.

Also ensure that they have opportunites to grow within the club structure.

  • Beginner Sessions
  • Improver/Intermediate Sessions
  • Advanced/Team Sessions

Like with the Junior Section put competitve tennis into your programme to compliment the coaching sessions.

  • Internal leagues for all standards
  • Club Team matches.
  • External Tournaments for the very keen!

Also add Fitness/Cardio/Pulse Sessions into your programme for fun and fitness!

Above all else......

Make sure you have a quality Coaching Team in place.

Fully qualified and highly motivated coaches who should run most of the programme (with the exception of adult league teams)

Put the programme in the hands of your coaches and they will make the

Tennis CLUB PROgramme work

Because.............

" There should be a CLUB PRO in every tennis CLUB PROgramme "
